Student rucksacks

Suitable for everyday use and back-friendly

You’re on your way to uni in a hurry, with your laptop in one hand and your coffee in the other. You have a busy day ahead – lectures, seminars and a trip to the library. Everything you need is stowed away in your trusty rucksack. But it keeps slipping, the strap digs into your shoulder and the zip on the main compartment is stuck. Your student rucksack should serve you reliably throughout the day, not cause you additional stress! It needs to have plenty of space, be comfortable to carry, look good and be robust enough to withstand everyday wear and tear.

To make sure your next student rucksack provides perfect support and lasts a long time, we’ve put together a checklist of essential features. Ultimately, you don’t want just any rucksack. You want one that perfectly suits the needs of your student lifestyle.

Basic requirements for every rucksack – not just for students

Non-toxic materials, ergonomically shaped straps, a hip belt for support and breathable back padding: some features don’t just apply to student rucksacks, but to all rucksack types. The key thing is that it distributes the load well throughout the day and supports your back. Here are some tips to make sure this is the case:

  • The shoulder straps should be well padded, ergonomically shaped and, of course, adjustable so you can adapt them to your body.
  • The back padding should be designed so that pressure isn’t exerted on the spine, but rather alongside the vertebrae.
  • As much weight as possible should be borne by your hips to relieve pressure on your shoulders. A hip belt and optimally designed back padding ensure this.
  • Compartment design also plays a key role in weight distribution. Side compression straps, for example, help to keep weight close to the body.
  • Any external side pockets should be the same on both sides so that you can distribute weight evenly.

Additional requirements for a good student rucksack

As well as the general criteria mentioned above, there are further features that turn a regular rucksack into the perfect student rucksack:

  • The rucksack needs to have multiple secure storage options to keep all important items well organised and easy to find.
  • For the bag to protect its contents well and last a long time, it has to be particularly robust.
  • Models that stand upright on their own are practical for everyday use and ensure a longer rucksack lifespan.
  • Water-repellent materials also help make the rucksack last longer. They also provide reliable protection for books, tablets and other valuable contents in all weather conditions.
  • A comfortable top grab handle is also a must. It can make a big difference, especially when you’re in a hurry. The empty rucksack itself shouldn’t be overly heavy and its weight needs to be in proportion to its volume. Lighter rucksacks can store more without becoming too heavy, so you can use them to hold everything you need for your day at uni.

Why you should buy a quality student rucksack rather than a run-of-the-mill one

Your rucksack supports you throughout the day and can make your student life much easier, or harder. It needs to be comfortable to wear and not strain your back. It needs to protect all your essentials and keep them within easy reach. And it needs to be robust enough for long-term use.
We have put together an extensive checklist to help you find exactly the right rucksack for day-to-day university life. You will also find a number of particularly good products that have earned the coveted AGR seal of approval.

Checklist for back-friendly student rucksacks

  • All materials should be tested for harmful chemicals and certified as non-toxic.
  • Ergonomically shaped and well-padded shoulder straps should be individually adjustable for an optimal fit to ensure that the rucksack fits snugly against the torso. Non-slip material that prevents or minimises slippage of the shoulder straps and a chest strap with adjustable height and length add extra comfort.
  • The back padding should be designed so that the spinous processes aren’t impacted and the main load is distributed evenly along the soft areas on either side of the spine. As much weight as possible should be borne by your hips (posterior superior iliac crest) to relieve the shoulders. The back padding should be sufficiently strong to prevent contents from pushing through.
  • Breathable back padding ensures good ventilation and reduces heat build-up on the back.
  • A chest strap, hip belt and compression straps ensure the rucksack sits centred and securely against the body and that weight is transferred optimally to the hips. They also stop the rucksack from swinging from side to side.
  • A specific compartment layout and side compression straps keep the weight close to the back, which helps to distribute weight evenly and makes the rucksack more comfortable to carry.
  • Any external storage features should be aligned on both sides for optimal weight distribution.
  • Intuitive and easy-to-use fasteners allow you to access your things easily whenever you need them.
  • The empty rucksack should be lightweight and its weight should be in proportion to its volume. The lighter it is, the more you can carry without it being a struggle – just what you need for your day at uni.
  • A robust design protects the contents of your student rucksack and also ensures that it lasts a long time.
  • Multiple secure storage options are particularly useful for students, as they can be used to organise books, pens, notepads, personal items and electronic devices.
  • A comfortable grab handle is a must, especially for when you are in a hurry.
  • It’s also useful if the rucksack can stand upright on its own and is water-repellent, as these features help maximise its lifespan as well.
