Gaming Chairs

Focus on ergonomics:
how a back-friendly gaming chair enhances your gaming experience

Let's be honest, long gaming sessions aren't all that healthy. Sitting for too long, and often in a hunched position, is generally bad for your back. Depending on the game in question, gaming also involves a particularly tense posture and repetitive movement patterns. If you want your back to cope well with this strain, you should definitely opt for a comfortable gaming chair.

What does a gaming chair need to do?

When you're gaming, you often sit at your computer or console for hours on end in a highly focussed state. That said, you still move around more than you would for a typical desk job. Many games require fast reactions and complex movement patterns. And that's quite apart from any emotional reactions. So, as well as needing a stable base to prevent injuries or strains, other criteria like seat depth damping or a multi-functional tilt mechanism are also important. A good gaming chair should meet these requirements and support your back to minimise the negative effects of long video game sessions. Gaming chairs combine ergonomics, comfort, stability and design to optimise the gaming experience and meet the specific needs of gamers.

Do you need to buy a good gaming chair?

Isn’t a normal office chair enough for gaming? Well, that depends. If you only play for an hour or two every now and again, then using an office chair is fine and you don't need anything extra. But if you love long gaming sessions and often get lost in your favourite game for several hours, then you should definitely buy a good gaming chair. The fact is that the requirements for office chairs and gaming chairs are significantly different. This becomes clear when you think about how differently you behave when you're working compared to when you're gaming. Working at a computer is, for example, less emotional and you don’t sink into the chair as much. A backrest with adjustable recline function and/or height-adjustable armrests are therefore far more important for a gaming chair than for a normal office chair. So, don't economise when it comes to your back; invest in a good chair for your gaming performance!

The features gamers love in a chair

For many gamers, their chair isn't just a place to sit, they want it to look good and offer maximum comfort as well. High-quality materials provide that touch of luxury, increase durability and complete the design. This is why imitation leather is a popular and hard-wearing material for seat and backrest surfaces.
When it comes to colour, many gamers love black, often combined with bright colours. Consequently, many models feature black imitation leather with colour or white accents.
The chair of course also needs to offer maximum comfort and durability.
Extra gaming chair functions are also popular. Several models have features like an integrated footrest, built-in speakers, vibration functions and a drinks holder to enhance the gaming experience. A good gaming chair is part of your performance, so it needs to be the perfect match for you in terms of comfort and design. And remember to take ergonomics into account so that the joy over your chair's great design isn't overshadowed. Because what good is the best-looking gaming chair if your back or neck hurts after every session? Make sure your back is well supported too!

The AGR seal of approval for gaming chairs

There are lots of different gaming chairs available on the market. It can be difficult for non-experts to know which of these chairs offer the right features for a healthy back. Plus, it's usually only when you get the chair home and start gaming that you realise the seat material isn’t anti-slip, the side bolsters aren't ideal or the neck support isn't adjustable, and you can't find the right position to feel comfortable. Make sure that your back is happy during your gaming sessions by choosing a gaming chair that has been awarded the AGR seal of approval! AGR certified products have undergone extensive testing by health experts, doctors, and therapists and have been identified as particularly back-friendly.

Checklist for back-friendly gaming chairs

  • The chair should be adjustable in several places to accommodate different body sizes and proportions.
  • The seat shouldn't exert pressure on the back of your thigh. Its design should provide sufficient support for the entire thigh area. This is achieved through a seat that is adjustable in length or available in different sizes. Ideally, you should be able to fit 3 to 4 side-by-side fingers between the hollow of your knee and the front edge of the seat.
  • The chair should be able to adapt to your natural and intuitive movements in a fluid and controlled manner, e.g. through movement mechanisms. Changing your sitting position should be easy.
  • The backrest should provide good support on contact without causing pressure points.
It should also allow you to lean back in a relaxed way; the backrest’s recline tension and tilt angle should therefore be adjustable.
  • The chair should have effective damping when you sit down, even in the lowest position, to prevent compression of the spine. Technical experts call this seat depth damping.
  • Neck support should be in place to relieve pressure on your neck muscles when you are in a relaxed, reclined position.
  • The gaming chair should also feature height-adjustable armrests to ease the strain on your neck muscles. Ideally, the armrests should be multi-adjustable in height, width and depth, and also be rotatable.
  • The shoulder and pelvic areas should have subtle side bolsters to support a comfortable sitting position. These shouldn't be too substantial. A sports car like effect isn't advisable as this restricts your sitting position too much.
  • The seat and backrest surfaces need to be sufficiently padded to avoid pressure points. The material should be easy to clean and prevent you from sliding on the chair.
  • The angle between your thighs and torso should be more than 90 degrees. This recommended angle means that the chair needs to have sufficient stability.
  • Additional lumbar support for the lower back is preferable but not essential. It also increases comfort.
