Children's shoes
The foundation for a healthy back all life long
Though often very small, children’s feet are no different in structure from adult feet. Children’s feet also consist of 28 bones, 31 joints, numerous tendons, ligaments and muscles, and thousands of fine nerves in a very compact space. Over 70 years, their owners will have walked the equivalent of four times around the globe. To be able to accomplish this mammoth task, you should ensure your children wear ergonomic shoes from an early age. This supports physiological development early on, thus laying a key foundation for a healthy back all life long.

Incorrect footwear: a cause of postural problems
Did you know that very few misalignments are congenital – most are acquired? Approximately 98% of all people are born with healthy feet, but, by adulthood, only 40% still have healthy feet!
A large proportion of children and young people suffer from foot weaknesses and even early-stage foot damage, which can ultimately lead to postural problems. In most cases, the causes are lack of exercise, hard floors and incorrect footwear. Scientific studies prove that the earlier these problems occur, the more negative the impact on physical development. We now know that the musculoskeletal system isn’t just made up of individual isolated components. Instead, it is a complex, interconnected and interacting system. Right from the very beginning, there’s a lot we can do to keep this system as healthy as possible.
No firm footwear in the first year of life
Important information for parents: Firm footwear isn’t necessary in the first twelve months of life. There’s even no need for socks in many cases, as they reduce the stimulation in the soles of the feet. The receptors located there play a crucial role in developing both strong foot muscles and sensorimotor skills.
Supporting natural foot development
By school age, ideally the foot and leg axis stabilisers (muscles, ligaments, foot skeleton) that are so important for overall body posture will have developed sufficiently. However, footwear should continue to support natural development of the feet and encourage an active and playful lifestyle.
The next important phase in development is middle to late school age. While lengthwise growth slows down, young people grow more in width. Here, too, the right footwear can alleviate or, better yet, prevent classic foot and postural weaknesses. Correct fit accuracy is important during this age range. Because one thing is certain, without healthy and strong feet, maintaining an upright posture is impossible, and the back will suffer too in the long term!
Checklist for back-friendly children’s shoes
- The length, width and fit of the shoes must take into account the special proportions of children’s feet. The likes of the Width Measurement System (WMS) criteria set down by the German Shoe Institute in Offenbach can serve as a guideline.
- The feet must be securely gripped to prevent forward slipping in the footwear. Important: The toes must not touch the tips of the shoes.
- The natural shape of the feet must not be impaired or altered by the footwear.
- Comfortable and flexible heel caps (rear foot guidance) ensures an ideal fit in the footwear.
- The feet’s complex mobility must also be possible in all directions in the footwear (e.g. through flexible soles).
- The walking surface must be perceptible when wearing the footwear. This is achieved through the likes of soft shoe soles that allow maximum feedback from the ground.
- The sole design, with an increasing sole height from the toes to the heels (known as the ‘heel-to-toe drop’), should be as low as possible. A heel-to-toe drop can be caused by either wedge soles or heels.
- The footwear should be easy to put on and take off.
- The soles must be non-slip.
- Naturally, children’s shoes must be free from harmful substances.
