Multi-purpose chairs
One for all
Some chairs are used very often where the crowd is constantly changing. They are usually used for a limited period of time, e.g. as chairs for conferences, dining rooms, visitor rooms or waiting rooms. We refer to these as multi-purpose chairs.
Multi-purpose chairs must be designed to accommodate a wide range of people in order to provide the best possible seating comfort in a variety of situations, as the name suggests. Most models cannot be customised for individual users. Therefore, the chairs should have the widest possible range of ergonomic properties to provide the best possible support for the body.
Encourage movement
People feel the need to move, so the chair should support or encourage the desire to change position. Multi-purpose chairs must therefore provide high levels of backrest and seat dynamics to enable back-friendly and comfortable seating.
Are they also suitable for minor office work?
As a rule, it is recommended to use an office chair for office work or in the home office. That is because it offers you a wide variety of adjustments that allow you to sit comfortably. However, even conference chairs that fall into this category occasionally feature minor adjustment options and can thus be recommended for short stretches of time. As a prerequisite, you must choose a chair that fits your body measurements as precisely as possible. The traditional multi-purpose chair, however, will not make you enjoy working at your desk for long, because it will not do your back any good. In this case, it is clearly advisable to use an adjustable office chair. You can read here about what you should look out for and which different models are available.
Checklist
- The chair must be suitable for people of many different shapes and sizes and permit dynamic, ergonomic and also relaxing, pleasant and comfortable sitting.
- In the rear sitting position, the chair should offer support in a range of about 12 to 28 cm (measured for the unloaded seat) for the lumbar spine and the top iliac crest (waistline).
- The chair should offer a sitting height of between 44 and 50 cm with a seat depth of between 43.5 and 48.5 cm. The minimum seat width should be about 42 cm.
- The product must allow active sitting. It must therefore be possible to tilt the seat forwards and backwards; the chair should have a dynamic backrest or other suitable solutions.
- The chair must have a shock absorber for the sitting surface to protect the spinal column against compression when sitting down (sitting depth suspension).
- The padding for the seat and backrest must be permeable with micro climate-friendly properties.
